We were lucky to get an inside look at the newly upgraded Igloolik municipal water system. Since the reservoir ran dry in 2015, Igloolik’s reservoir has been expanded, new piping has been put in between Mianiqsivik (the ‘feeding lake’) and the reservoir, and a state-of-the-art water treatment plant has been constructed, replacing the old plant from the 1970’s. Joasai from Public Works graciously took us on a very informative tour, with help from Bob, who showed us the intricacies of the water treatment plant. Its triple-filter system filters out any particles bigger than one micron (which is extremely tiny!) – a major improvement from the old system that lacked a filter!
